The Internal Revenue Service sponsors workshops to educate people involved in small businesses about their rights and responsibilities as business taxpayers. Some workshops are co-sponsored by other federal agencies and involve state and local taxing bodies. These workshops are held monthly, in most cases, and generally are free. The IRS web site includes a Small Business Corner with information for small businesses.

Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE)

SCORE offers management counseling for small business by retired executives and business owners. A wide range of expertise allows for matching SCORE members with client needs. SCORE works confidentially with existing businesses to analyze problems and help find solutions. SCORE also conducts seminars and workshops with special emphasis on small business start-up. This site has links to other business information including an excellent Business Owner's Toolkit and offers a business e-mail counseling service

U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA)

An independent federal agency which provides the prospective, new and established person in the small business community with financial assistance, management counseling and training. SBA helps obtain and direct government procurement contracts for small firms. Financial assistance is offered through the SBA's loan programs in which private lenders participate. A new Low Documentation (LODOC) application has greatly simplified the process for loan requests of $100,000 or less. Counseling is provided through SCORE and Small Business Development Centers. Surety Bond assistance is offered to contractors. The SBA maintains an office of International Trade which encourages small business to participate in international trade by offering a wide range of educational and assistance programs. The SBA also has numerous business publications and videos on financial management, planning, personnel, management and marketing. The site also operates a U.S. Business Advisor site with pertinent advise and help topics.
